Necessity is the mother of invention: Bringing NDIS Assistive Technology to life

Image Description: A mother and her son sit at a table laughing, she is holding his arm and looking at his face, and there is drawing on the table in front of the boy.

In the world of innovation, there is a powerful truth: "Necessity is the mother of invention." And perhaps no one personifies this truth quite like a mother whose child has unique needs. Mothers, fathers, and anyone caring for a loved one with an NDIS plan, see the daily challenges that disability brings. They recognise the gaps, see the struggles in real time, and do their best to meet the needs that arise.

But there’s not always an easy fix, no band-aid to place onto wounded knee with a kiss and promise that everything’s ok. Sometimes needs go unmet, but every now and then, those needs lead to something transformative.

Here are the stories of three inspiring mothers, Michelle, Tara, and Rachel, who took their child’s needs and created products to make their life, and the lives of countless others, easier. Through determination and creativity, these visionary mums are shaping the landscape of assistive technology in the NDIS, by turning necessities into inventions.

Michelle Ebbin and Jettproof

Enter the world of JettProof, a heartfelt initiative born from a mother's love and concern for her son, Jett, who was diagnosed with severe autism, global development delay, and sensory processing disorder at the age of three. Michelle, Jett's mother, faced the challenges of witnessing up to 12 meltdowns before midday on most days.

Desperate to find a solution to help Jett stay calm, focused, and responsive, she embarked on a worldwide search for a sensory-based garment that could gently self-regulate her son throughout the day, be worn under regular clothing, and in all seasons. However, she was unable to find anything that ticked the boxes, so she took matters into her own hands. With a background in business and inspired by the sensory compression studies of Dr. Temple Grandin, JettProof came to life.

Today, JettProof offers a range of clothing and undergarments thoughtfully designed to provide sensory compression for individuals with autism, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, anxiety, and more. Beyond just clothing, JettProof embodies comfort, peace, and improved well-being for those who need it most. Michelle’s dedication and love continues to fuel a remarkable mission, transforming lives and making a significant difference for countless individuals and families worldwide.

Tara Gray and Prompt Education

Prompt Education's inspiring journey from necessity to invention began when Tara's eldest son received a moderate to severe autism diagnosis. Recognising the importance of early intervention and the role visual aids play in the learning journey of children with ASD, Tara set out to find suitable flashcards and software. However, she discovered that the prices were beyond the reach of the average family. Undeterred, Tara decided to create these resources herself.

The visual aids she crafted played a transformative role in her son's journey from nonverbal to becoming a confident communicator. As word spread, other families soon sought Tara's creations for their own children and in just a few months, Prompt Education was born and the demand for these valuable resources soared.

Tara's determination and innovation led her to design simple yet highly effective visual aids, specially tailored for children on the autism spectrum. Utilising imported machinery and her creative ingenuity, she crafted Picture Enhanced Communication Scheme (PECS) resources that addressed the specific needs of children with autism. These tools not only benefited her son but also proved to be invaluable for countless other children in need of accessible and impactful learning materials.

Today, Prompt Education continues to champion a future where individuals with disabilities have access to the tools necessary to reach their fullest potential. As an NDIS provider, Tara's mission extends beyond providing products; she offers customised solutions and valuable techniques to schools, empowering children to learn and grow. Prompt Education has emerged as a trusted partner for parents and professionals alike, leaving a lasting and positive impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Rachel Whittaker and BraEasy

Rachel Whittaker's journey with BraEasy began when her daughter faced challenges following a stroke during surgery at 9 years old. By the time her daughter turned 15, Rachel realised that the stroke had made it difficult for her to put on and take off a bra independently. Understanding the significance of this simple act and the freedom and independence it would bring, Rachel was determined to find a solution for her daughter and others facing similar challenges.

Driven by her love for her daughter and a passion to create a more inclusive world for all women, Rachel embarked on a mission to make a difference. Her goal was to design a bra that went beyond functionality, incorporating beauty and ease of use into its core.

With praise such as being called "the best adaptive bra in the world," BraEasy stands out as a game-changer. It is the first bra designed to be put on with one hand and taken off with just two fingers. Thoughtfully crafted to cater to the diverse needs of women, BraEasy ensures that everyone can find their perfect fit. The bra's super soft and easy-to-use Velcro side openings allow for effortless one-handed dressing, and the front adjustable straps eliminate the need to reach around to the back, making it even more convenient.

Through her incredible journey, Rachel has become an advocate for inclusion, championing the cause and making a positive impact on the lives of countless women. With BraEasy, she continues to inspire and empower individuals with disabilities, proving that innovation in assistive technology can lead to remarkable transformations.
